PATH I: Investigating Civil War Soldiers from Beverly

Civil War Soldiers > Beverly Public Library > Center for Lowell History > National Archives

Portrait of an enlisted man, 23rd Massachusetts Volunteers, Company A.  Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, reproduction number LC-B8184-10691

Who were the men that fought in the Civil War from Beverly, Massachusetts?   We planned to compile a database of demographic information concerning Beverly’s involvement in Civil War.  We connected the soldiers by name with permanent demographic data taken from census records, letters, and diaries.    At the Beverly Public Library we looked over the lists of registered men.  Their rank, regiment, and company was the only information provided.  What else could we find out about them?   Was it true that rich men could use their money and influence to avoid fighting?  Where should we look first?
