Sir,
The committee of the House of Representatives to whom a petition of
the creditors claiming payment of the new emission Bills, is referred,
request of you a statement of the sum total charged by this State to
the United States, and the total value at which it was charged. If you
have any evidence that the value charged, was not allowed, please do
inform us how much was dedicated from the sum charged? — The petitioners
state that they have a copy of all the charges, taken from the public
book, & that the average value charged to the U.S. was 19/8 in the
$. We have not examined their papers as we wish to have your statement
finished. If from the manner in which the general balance was struck
by the Commisioners, it cannot be ascertained with how much (if any)
was deducted from the value charged for the Bills, yet from your communications,
we toast you may form the best opinion that can be obtained in the case.
Be pleased to favor the committee with your answer as soon as may be,
as they wish to make their report soon.
I ( ) Sir
Your humble servant
Edward ( )
Honorable
Nathan Dane Esq.
