Fish Flake Hill is the oldest part of Beverly, originally founded by Roger Conant of Salem, MA, 1626. Fish Flake Hill’s original name was Cape Anne Syde, which was a small fishing community located on Beverly Harbor. Beverly started out here making its commerce from the fishing business. The main fish that the community caught was the codfish, which could be dried, salted, and shipped. The fishermen dried the fish right on the hell, and the flakes of the fishes skin were left behind, this explains the name "Fish Flake Hill". The fishing and shipping industry created the need for a small navy. But when the industrial era start, the fishing industry faded away and made way for more of a trading and shipping industry of oil and produced for the close by factory named "The Shoe" which made machines to make shoes. In the end of the industrial era always making a thriving skilled, happy community into poor paranoid slaves in a factory.
Fish flake hill, at this point is a timepiece of course. Today it is a historic area protected by the city of Beverly. The once highly economic harbor, Fish Flake Hill is set on, is now a marina with condos on the edge. The fishing is not completely gone thought, illustrated by the lobster boat photograph on the front. There is still a good amount of fishing and lobster trapping in Beverly Harbor. I believe it is extremely important to remember how the city of Beverly Massachusetts started.Damion Cotter
