Christine Comiskey’s research on Georgetown’s Cuffee Dole is exactly what the “What Ever Happened to..” Project is hoping to attain on a county-wide level. Starting with the gravestone in Union Cemetery in Georgetown and the linkage of many pertinent resources including vital statistics (Birth, Death), and records of probate, Court of Common Pleas, Church, Census, Registry of Deeds, availed Comiskey the opportunity to weave a fascinating story of the life of Cuffee Dole as both a slave and a freeman.
Comiskey’s book A Respectable Man of Color: The Legend of Cuffee Dole is highly recommended, and available for purchase through the Georgetown Historical Society’s website.
