In honor of Black History Month, we invite you to check out one of our most extensive projects to date. The Boston African Americans in Antebellum Boston project features a database of African Americans in living on Beacon Hill and surrounding neighborhoods between 1835 and 1865, tracing the effects of the Fugitive Slave Law on the population. The project includes a GIS map of the neighborhood, showing the locations of residents taken from Boston City directories and linked to demographic information from the federal census. Also included is research conducted by students using this new primary source material. Mixed in among these traces of the lives of everyday people are several famous abolitionists such as Lewis Hayden, William C. Nell, and Frederick Douglass.
