In the past when the literate population was much less that it was now, it was necessary for business’s to depict their trade via shape. Many people were illiterate and needed alternative routes of recognizing a shape rather than a written sign. In this picture the outline of a boot is quite obvious on the sign. Although the majority of the population is literate today, this sign depicts the characteristics of signs that have remained the same over time.
