Roger
Conant
Roger Conant
was born in 1592 in East Budleigh, Devonshire, England. In 1623 he and
his family migrated to Plymouth and in 1625 he and his family were invited
to move from Plymouth to Cape Ann. In 1626 he moved his family to Naumkaeg,
which is now theterritory of Salem, MA. Conant became the governor of
this area at the time as well. Conant only remained governor until 1628
when a group of settlers came from England and owned the right to that
land and the leader of these crusaders took over the position of governor.
Roger Conant built the first house in Salem which is now located on Essex
Street in Beverly. In 1639 he was among the people to sign a document
allowing the First Church in Salem to be enlarged and these records can
be found in City Hall today. Roger Conant is significant because he and
his followers settled the land in which we now live on. They were the
first to come to this area and because of that, there is a great deal
of history that comes about after this time. The Salem Witch Trials later
happened in some territory of Salem (now Danvers).
Roger Conant died in 1678 at the age of 87 and he can be used as a great
vehicle or window to the past.
