|Director Martha Mayo was instrumental in teaching students how to research Civil War documents.|
Our trip to the Center for Lowell History provided us with a glimpse of a useful and helpful local history repository. Director Martha Mayo exhibited several significant items in the collection, such as papers of Civil War veterans, including diaries, letters, and artwork. Also useful to our inquiry was a database that volunteers at the Center created called the Union Veterans and Widows of the Veterans of the Civil War. This is an index to the Union Civil War veteran’s schedule of 1890. For our project to produce a Beverly Civil War Soldiers Database, we also needed to know how to find names in the census. To find out, we turned to the National Archives in Waltham.
