To the honorable Nathan Dane of Beverly in Our
County of Essex.
Greeting
Whereas
our General Court at their session begun and held in Boston in Our County
of Suffolk, on the fourth Wednesday being the twenty third day of January
in this present year, did by their order passed on the twenty seventh
day of February then next following authorize the appointment of three
Commissioners to take into consideration the Message of Our Governor,
to Our said Legislature, of the twenty ninth day of January aforesaid
"relative to disturbances in Our County of Lincoln, with the documents
accompanying the same, and also o take into consideration the Memorial
from the inhabitants of the town of Bristol, Edge comb, Noble burough,
New Castle and Boothbay, and the memorial signed Samuel Tucker and others,
all of which are now pending before the general Court, and to go into
said County of Lincoln, investigate thoroughly the nature and causes
of the difficulties stated in said message and documents, and also the
nature and causes , and state of the difficulties and grievances complained
of in said Memorials."
We therefore confiding in your integrity, ability and discretion, Do
hereby appoint you the honorable Nathan Dane of Beverly in Our County
of Essex, to associate with the honorable Perez Morton of Boston in
Our County of Suffolk, Our Attorney General, and Jonathan Smith Junr
of West Springfield in Our County of Hampshire Esquire, and proceed
to the consideration of the Message, documents and memorials before
mentioned and into Our said County of Lincoln for the purposes recited,
and vest you and them collectively with power to send for such persons
and papers as may appear to you and them to determined fully in the
subject of your Commission, you with Our said other Commissioners giving
notice of the time and place of your first meeting, to the Selectmen
of the towns before named and also to the Said Samuel Tucker, and t
said other person as you with our said other Commissioners may deem,
it expedient to notify. And do empower you with our said other Commissioners
to employ a Clerk to attend you and them in the exccusion of Your Commission.
And we do hereby require that you the said honorable Nathan Dane with
our said other Commissioners, report, as soon as may be, to state of
facts onto the subject hereby referred to you and them, and that you
recommend such measures as in your and their opinion may be expedient
for Our Legislature to adopt for the restoration of tranquility in Our
said County of Lincoln, and for the redness of grievances, if any exist
there in.
